Biography
Dr Bill McCallion is a paediatric surgeon, TEDx speaker, conference host and speaker whose career spans over thirty years at the forefront of children’s medicine. Drawing on a lifetime of high-stakes decision-making, he brings a rare and compelling perspective to audiences on leadership, resilience, success and the psychology of high performance.
His surgical career demanded not only clinical excellence but a finely honed ability to make critical decisions under pressure — often in circumstances where the outcome was the difference between life and death. That experience, combined with a deep interest in the traits that define successful leaders, has shaped a speaking portfolio that is as relevant in the boardroom or on the sports field as it is in the operating theatre.
Bill’s own path to success was far from straightforward. He began at the very bottom of the ladder, navigating a learning disability he did not know he had, while surviving multiple traumatic events in his childhood and adolescence. Those experiences forged the resilience and determination that would carry him to the top of his profession — and today form the backbone of a speaking style that is authentic, humorous and deeply human.
As well as an accomplished keynote speaker, Bill is a highly experienced conference host and MC, most recently hosting the Management Leadership Network event in Belfast in February 2026, which attracted 500 attendees from Northern Ireland’s business community. He has also hosted interviews with senior figures including former President of Ireland Mary Robinson. His forthcoming book, Every Skyscraper Has a Foundation, brings together the insights and stories that have made him a sought-after voice on success, adversity and leadership.
Topics
The Five A’s of Success
A road map to achievement at almost anything.
Bill’s signature framework sets out five signposts to success, built on the key pillars of work ethic, emotional intelligence and adaptability. Drawing on three decades of surgical experience and a lifetime of personal learning, he gives audiences a practical and memorable model for achieving their goals — in business, sport or life.
The Joy Factor
Why a bit of craic at work changes everything.
Exploring the profound benefits of job satisfaction, this talk draws on sources as diverse as Aristotle and modern neuroscience to make a compelling case for the power of joy in the workplace. Bill demonstrates why having genuine fun at work is not a distraction from performance — it is the engine of it, improving team cohesion, creativity and productivity.
Bounce Back, Leap Forward
How adversity becomes the foundation for achievement.
In this honest and moving talk, Bill describes how a deep sense of personal loss in his childhood and adolescence forged a resilience that held him in good stead throughout his career as a paediatric surgeon. He shares what he learned about recovery, growth and the mindset that allows people to not just survive setbacks, but use them as the springboard to something greater.
Wired for Achievement
Nature, nurture and the science of success.
How much of the skill set required to succeed is hard-wired in our DNA, and how much is shaped by experience? Bill explores the fascinating intersection of genetics, neuroscience and personal development to challenge assumptions about talent and potential — and to show that the capacity to achieve is far more universal than most people believe.
Masterclasses
From the Depths to the Summit — and What to Do When You Get There
Bill’s masterclass draws on his own remarkable journey from a disadvantaged start in life to the top of his surgical profession, using that story as a lens through which to explore the universal principles of achievement. Participants are taken through the mindset, habits and decisions that determine success — and then, just as importantly, invited to consider what success is for. Drawing on the psychology and neuroscience of altruism, Bill argues that when you reach the top of the ladder, the most powerful thing you can do is give something back.
Audiences will leave with:
- A practical understanding of the Five A’s framework and how to apply it
- Insight into the role of emotional intelligence, adaptability and work ethic in high performance
- A renewed perspective on adversity as a driver rather than a barrier to success
- Reflection on the relationship between personal achievement and contribution to others
