Jim Gavin

Former Dublin GAA Manager, Five-in-a-Row All-Ireland Winner and Military Pilot, Expert in Leadership Under Sustained Pressure and Resilience

Why book Jim Gavin?

  • Jim Gavin managed Dublin’s senior footballers to six All-Ireland titles in seven seasons, including an unprecedented five in a row.
  • He spent twenty years in the Irish Defence Forces, reaching the rank of Commandant, with senior responsibilities in flying instruction and military aviation operations, before moving into senior civil aviation leadership roles.
  • Jim has chaired the Dublin Citizens’ Assembly, the North East Inner City Programme Implementation Board and the GAA’s Football Review Committee, bringing experience of both direct command and consensus-based leadership to corporate and public service audiences.

Biography

Jim Gavin grew up in Clondalkin, Dublin, and won an All-Ireland title as a player before his career as Dublin’s senior football manager.

He joined the Air Corps as a cadet pilot and served for twenty years in the Defence Forces. His appointments included Chief Flying Instructor, Chief Pilot and Chief of Military Aviation Operations on international peacekeeping missions. He later held senior operational leadership roles in Ireland’s civil aviation system.

Aviation informs his approach to leadership: preparation gives people a basis for sound decisions when conditions change. Clear responsibilities matter, as does an honest review afterwards, even when the outcome was good.

Appointed Dublin manager in 2012, Jim led the team through seven seasons that produced six All-Ireland titles and the first five consecutive wins in the competition’s history. Sustained success brought its own demands. Maintaining standards required players and management to keep questioning how they worked, including during winning runs.

Beyond sport, he has chaired the Dublin Citizens’ Assembly, the North East Inner City Programme Implementation Board and the GAA’s Football Review Committee. These roles involved working through different interests and delivering progress with people who did not report to him.

Jim draws on these experiences to discuss the everyday work behind sustained performance, including how leaders respond to setbacks and help a team regain its confidence without lowering expectations.

Topics

When Pressure Becomes Permanent

How leaders sustain performance, recover from setbacks and protect judgement when demand stays high.

A difficult period usually comes with the hope of a return to normal. When pressure becomes the usual working environment, leaders need to reconsider how much they ask of people and how they support them. Jim explores how preparation and trust help a team cope, and what needs attention when fatigue begins to affect decisions.

Resilience runs through this talk. It includes the habits built before a setback, the way a leader responds when something goes wrong, and the work of getting people ready to perform again. The emphasis is on actions an audience can apply in its own organisation.

Themes include

  • Recognising when sustained pressure is starting to weaken judgement.
  • Building standards that people hold each other to without constant supervision.
  • Making decisions with incomplete information and reviewing them honestly.
  • Recovering from setbacks while dealing with scrutiny and disappointment.
  • Maintaining discipline during success, when it becomes easier to overlook problems.
  • Delivering change through people and organisations you do not control.

The Long Game: Performance That Survives Setbacks

A more personal emphasis for audiences interested in resilience over a career. Jim explores how teams sustain a standard over years, what happens to confidence after a loss, and how leaders help people return to the task. This can be a standalone talk or part of the wider pressure theme.

    Topics

    The Leadership of Choice

Austrian neurologist and philosopher Viktor Frankl once said, ‘Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.’
This belief sits at the heart of Jim Gavin’s leadership philosophy.
In this talk, Jim explores how leaders can empower teams to play to their strengths, fostering resilient, creative decision-making even in times of uncertainty.

    Intrinsic Motivation

Jim believes that all humans have an innate drive to realise their full potential.
How can leaders unlock this desire? Drawing inspiration from Abraham Maslow, Jim shares how leaders can tap into the momentum, creativity, and energy that flourish when individuals are given autonomy to make decisions and encouraged to reach their potential.
In this talk, Jim offers actionable strategies for empowering teams to perform at their best.

    Resilience

Greek philosopher Epictetus said, ‘It isn’t the things themselves that disturb people, but the judgments that they form about them.’
This principle underpins Jim Gavin’s passion for Stoic philosophy, which he applies to coaching high-performing teams.
In this talk, Jim shares insights on building team resilience, psychological safety, and trust, fostering transparent relationships that drive sustainable high performance—what he calls ‘high-performance continuity.’

Resilience – Lessons Learnt from High Performance

Many of us collapse under the stress, pressure and worry. But there are a lucky few who are able to handle these events and take them in their stride. It’s almost as if they perform better because of it.

Why is that? Do they simply have a different outlook? What are their skills and behaviours? Can we learn from them and become more resilient ourselves?

In this masterclass, 6-time All Ireland-winning football manager Jim Gavin will teach you the What, Why and How of resilience skills and help you become more effective in your everyday life.
