Biography
Dr Michal Kosinski is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he researches the deep interplay between artificial intelligence, big data, and human psychology. Drawing on computational social science and psychometrics, his pioneering work uses digital footprints—such as social media “likes,” web-browsing logs, and even facial images—to model and predict personal traits, preferences, and behaviour at scale.
Dr Kosinski earned his PhD in Psychology from the University of Cambridge, where he also led innovative research linking personality and digital behaviour. Before joining Stanford, he served as Deputy Director of the Psychometrics Centre at Cambridge and worked in Microsoft Research’s Machine Learning group.
His research has been widely cited—placing him among the top 1% of highly cited researchers globally —and has influenced public and policy debates. He was notably behind the first press article warning of Cambridge Analytica’s use of psychological profiling. His work has inspired a cover story in The Economist, a 2014 theatre production titled Privacy, and multiple TED talks.
Beyond academia, Kosinski advises governments and major organisations on responsible AI and data ethics. He has testified before bodies such as the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the European Parliament, and the U.S. Department of Justice, helping shape policies around privacy, algorithmic transparency, and digital profiling. Committed to social impact, he gives at least 10% of his income to effective charities, and encourages others to do likewise.
