Biography
At age 20, Jack Kavanagh suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury that left him with only 15% muscle function.
Despite this, he rebuilt his life with determination and purpose. Today, he speaks passionately on health, wellbeing, resilience, and inclusive leadership.
In his keynotes, Jack explores how personal adversity can fuel growth. He emphasizes the importance of building environments where people feel they truly belong and are valued.
While on holiday with friends, Jack misjudged the depth of the sea during a dive. He hit the sand, broke his neck, and was paralysed from the chest down. He spent nine months in rehabilitation, learning to breathe unaided again.
However, he didn’t give up. Jack returned to university and successfully completed his pharmacy degree, showing the power of mindset and grit. After qualifying as a health professional, Jack used his story to inspire others.
He now delivers engaging talks filled with humility, honesty, and actionable insight. He describes himself as an “optimistic realist”—someone who faces life’s realities while challenging perceived limitations.
His story encourages audiences to lead with empathy, build resilience, and unlock human potential—both individually and collectively.
Jack hosts the popular Only Human Podcast, where he explores what it means to thrive in a complex world.
He also serves on the board of the National Disability Authority and the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design, advocating for more accessible and inclusive systems.
He is also involved with Common Purpose Ireland, where he contributes to leadership development programmes that focus on social impact and community connection.
In 2016, Jack was the focus of the award-winning documentary Breaking Boundaries.

“We engaged Jack to talk to my team about “Resilience and How to Live Well Now” with the ongoing Covid restrictions. The session was excellent and the feedback from the team was exceptionally positive. People talked about how relevant it was and how the things Jack talked about had really resonated with them. Many said that they had made notes of things to take away and reflect further on. This was exactly the response I had hoped for – Jack’s content was spot on and he tapped into the mood of his audience perfectly. Super valuable for the team – thank you!”
